Connecting Slack ​

Connecting Slack takes a few minutes. You need to be an admin or the owner in Overdesk, and allowed to add apps to your Slack workspace.

Before you start ​

  • A Slack workspace can be connected to only one Overdesk workspace. If yours is already connected to another Overdesk account, disconnect it there first. Otherwise Slack's approval ends on a page saying the workspace is already connected.
  • Only admins and the owner can connect Slack. Everyone else can see that it is connected, with a note that an admin manages connections.

Connect the app ​

  1. In Overdesk, open Integrations and choose Slack.
  2. Click Connect. Slack opens and asks you to approve the Overdesk app for your workspace.
  3. Approve it. Overdesk confirms the connection and links you back to the Slack page. If you cancel, or take too long on Slack's screen, nothing is saved; start again from the Slack page.
  4. Under "Where should Overdesk post in Slack?", type your channel into Channel, for example #support, and click Save.
  5. In Slack, open that channel and run /invite @Overdesk. Posts to a channel the bot has not joined do not appear.
  6. Back in Overdesk, click Send test. Overdesk sends a test message to every destination you have saved and confirms each one.

Choose what goes to Slack ​

Once a channel is saved, it receives your scheduled reports and analyses, and an escalation alert each time a guardrail escalates a conversation to a person. Other alerts, such as a failed draft, stay on the Alerts page and are not posted to Slack. To change what reaches the channel, an admin opens Settings → Notifications, where each kind of message is a row and each destination is a column. Untick Slack on any row you want kept out of the channel, then click Save routing. A row with nothing ticked sends nothing, and no delivery is recorded as failed. See Notifications.

Change the channel or disconnect ​

  • To move posts to another channel, change Channel on the Slack page and click Save. Invite the bot to the new channel too.
  • To stop posting without disconnecting, clear Channel and click Save.
  • Disconnect on the Slack page deletes the stored Slack credentials and frees your Slack workspace to be connected elsewhere. You can connect again at any time.

If posts are not arriving ​

Two causes cover almost every case: no channel is saved on the Slack page, or the bot is not in the channel. Run /invite @Overdesk in the channel, then use Send test to confirm.
